Real Estate in Mesilla, NM

Mesilla is a small historic village in Doña Ana County that borders Las Cruces on the northeast, with the Rio Grande running through its western part. It is part of the Las Cruces metropolitan area, and its Spanish colonial feel sets it apart.

History you can see

Settlers from Chihuahua, Mexico founded Mesilla in the 1840s. The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo placed it in the United States, and it was incorporated in 1848. The Gadsden Purchase of 1853 settled a border dispute over the land.

During the Civil War, Mesilla was briefly the capital of the Confederate Territory of Arizona, from 1861 to 1862. It was a crossroads of stagecoach and trade routes. When the railroad bypassed it in 1881 in favor of Las Cruces, growth slowed, which is part of why the village looks the way it does today.

The plaza and village

The Mesilla Plaza and the surrounding La Mesilla Historic District are a National Historic Landmark. The Basilica of San Albino faces the plaza and was raised to minor basilica status in 2008. The Fountain Theatre has operated since the early 1900s.

The plaza is the heart of the village. It hosts the annual Cinco de Mayo celebration, and the plaza is lit with luminarias on Christmas Eve.

Good to know when buying or selling

How to get started

The first step is a conversation. Tell us what you are hoping to do and when, and we will suggest a plan. For buyers, that usually means talking through your budget and priorities, then viewing homes that fit. For sellers, it means a walk-through of the property and a discussion of pricing and timing.
